The beauty of the landscape in-between emerald seas and green cliffs, the infinite allure of historical sites like Pompeii and Herculaneum, the warmth of the weather during the greater part of the year, is what makes the Sorrentine peninsula and the Amalfi coast ideal destinations for a perfect break. Sorrento is known for its natural beauty, its lovely weather, the variety of local products, the movie Pane, Amore e Fantasia with the famous Sophia Loren and the wonderful song (Torna a Surriento), composed in 1902 on the occasion of the visit of Prime Minister Giuseppe Zanardelli.
The name of the city comes from “Surrentum” which recalls the myth of the Sirens, creatures with the bodies of birds and the heads of beautiful women who hypnotized men with their hypnotic singing. Sorrento was in Roman Empire the summer residence of the noble and rich people indeed among all the ruins of the city there is a villa called Villa Pollio belonging to an old Roman Pollio Felice, which shows the signs of the Roman presence.
Sorrento like all the other cities in Campania is a trove of historical and religious tradition. In Sorrento, in fact, you can visit the Cathedral, rebuilt in the fifteenth century, the Church of St. Francesco d’ Assisi, with a remarkable fourteenth-century cloister, the Basilica di Sant'Antonio, where it possible to visit the crypt of Sant'Antonino; the Museum Correale, one of the biggest museums in Southern Italy, where Greek and Roman archaeological ruins and Capodimonte ceramics are exhibited, and the Archaeological Museum of the Sorrento Peninsula, where you will discover the whole story of Sorrento peninsula and the surrounding area, the Villa Comunale, which stands where once laid the monks’ gardens located just a short walk from the monastery. The Villa is considered to be a part of Sorrento and offers a fabulous view over the Gulf of Naples with two bronze busts of Bartolomeo Capasso and Saverio Gargiulo; the old Largo del Castello, Piazza Tasso today, whose facade is the result of recent urban changes is the main part of the city. Once you get there you can immediately see the statue of Sant'Antonino in the centre of the square, once a substantial part of the castle that lay in the centre.
The extreme extension of the peninsula is called Punta Campanella, a wonderful paradise always crowded with a multitude of tourists from all over the world.. Thanks to its strategic location the city is the starting point for the main tourist attractions. The tip of the peninsula is in fact, about 5 km away from Capri, the harbour of Marina Piccola can be easily reached by public transportation, Ischia and Procida, whose lines are visible from the coast on a beautiful sunny day can be reached by hydrofoil in a short time. You can reach the famous cities of Pompeii and Ercolano in half an hour and Naples in about an hour by the local train called Circumvesuviana.
