Sorrento this wonderful city which inspired many English novelists with its ancient origins, today is considered to be the base from where it is possible to explore its 30 km of Sorrentine peninsula which are a perfect combination of creeks, caves and volcanic sandy beaches full of chaise lounges. Among the most popular beaches of the region there is the Marina Piccola where the Sorrento Harbour stands. Marina Piccola remains the most attractive place visited by many visitors even if it is not very far from the centre of the city.
There is another beach called Marina Grande in order to distinguish it from the other one. The Marina Grande (Large Marina) is very closed to Corso Italia and it is the oldest of the two. It is particularly attractive in the low season when it is possible to admire all the beauty of this place and feel the natural atmosphere of Sorrento. After the Capo di Sorrento there is another small and attractive beach called Marina di Puolo in Massa Lubrense which lies in the final part of Sorrento Peninsula called the Cape Campanella. Marina di Puolo is one of the numerous hamlets situated in this part of the coast. It is a village with the houses built on the beach.
It used to be a small village of fishermen but today is famous because of its restaurants, bars and bathing establishments. The little bay is still full of fishing boats but the most important activity is tourism. The most popular beach of the Sorrentine Peninsula is doubtless Bagni della Regina Giovanna (Queen Joan's Baths). This part of the coast lies in the cape of Sorrento, not far away from the city of Sorrento just a few kilometers away from it.
There is an extraordinary legend about the origins of the Queen Joan's Baths which are said to have taken their name from Queen Joan II of Anjou who loved the wonderful and clear water of the blue see. If you look carefully you can notice the ruins of an ancient Villa of the 1st century AD overlooking the entire bay. The wonderful villa is a part of a fantastic past rich in history and culture.
